Things are looking upwards for the Gaucho football team as they beat the Phoenix College Bears 36-19 Sept. 8 at Phoenix College.

“We’re still real sloppy, we have to correct a lot of things. We had to sit a few guys in the first half because they were late for meetings on Labor Day, they came in and really helped us in the second half” Gauchos head coach Mickey Bell said.

The Gauchos were held for under 100 yards passing and quarterback Elijah Lorence threw one interception, but made up for it with their running game.

The Gauchos had a total of 341 rushing yards and quarterback Elijah Lorence led the team with 141 yards and also produced two rushing touchdowns. Gauchos running back Dexter Carter would produce 72 yards rushing as well.

Special teams would be a main contributor to the Gauchos success. Gauchos wide receiver Andrew Banks would have 137 punt return yards and would get himself on the stat sheet with a touchdown.

“You know what helped was Andrew Bank’s kick return, because they just scored there’s nothing like a comeback score like that not only to get points but you deflate their momentum. And that was a crucial play I thought in the game” Bell said.

The Gauchos defense forced three interceptions from the Bears quarterbacks. Phoenix College quarterback Jordan Suydam would throw one interception and quarterback Cameron Yowell would end up throwing two.

Phoenix College quarterback Gilbert Villalobos would throw for a touchdown in his opening drive in the fourth quarter.

The Gauchos look to keep their win streak as they play Pima Community College on Saturday Sept. 15 at GCC. Kickoff starts at 7 p.m.
