The Glendale Community College Men’s Soccer team was narrowly defeated 3-2 Sept. 12 at Pioneer Park, leaving the Gauchos  with a 2-3-2 record as they continue to fight for a playoff spot.

“We played one of the top teams in the country, we gave them everything they thought they could handle, but we were a little unlucky down the stretch. Overall I thought we played well and showed that we are one of the top teams,” Gauchos head coach, Jesus Cardiel-Pacheco, said.

The Gauchos got off to a fast start in this game, scoring two goals in the first half, one from Freshman Mario Hannah and one from Sophomore David Cox.

Early on the Gauchos looked crisp, and their passes were excellent.

“We were relaxed, played our style of play, made good touches, and played how we like to play” Cardiel said.

“I thought we played a solid game. We were dominating in the first couple of minutes, but in the end I think we just got a little bit too comfortable,” Gauchos Sophomore, Adam Adoyi, said.

After scoring the game’s first two goals, the Gauchos surrendered three unanswered goals, including the go-ahead from Freshman Midfielder Jose Romero with under 10 minutes remaining.  Sophomore Midfielder Daisuke Tanaka and Freshman Forward Gio Ahumada also scored for Pima.

“We have a very young team. We probably have two sophomore starters – the rest are freshmen. Part of it is just part of growing up and learning that they can compete with these guys. When we put it all together, it looked good. I think we started panicking a little bit,” Cardiel said.

The Gauchos will be home against South Mountain Community College on Saturday Sept. 16. The game will start at 12:30 p.m.
