GCC women’s basketball takes on Phoenix College

The Glendale Community College Gauchos will return to GCC Gymnasium Feb. 6 to take on the Phoenix College Bears in a rematch of a early season game that the lady Gauchos were able to take easily with a score of 67-48 in December 2015.

In the match-up that took place at Phoenix College, Glendale came out strong and built a 25-8 first quarter lead that PC was unable to rebound from. Four Gauchos managed double digits in scoring and were led by freshman guard Porshae Hearn who recorded a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Feb. 6 showdown will be a good one as PC will look to get their revenge against the Gauchos who will be looking to take the season sweep against one of their biggest conference rivals.

Freshmen guard Rebekah Brewer, who recorded seven points off the bench in the previous match-up says “ We plan on winning again. Last game we did a good job at playing together as a team and played good defense which helped us keep them at a low score and allowed us to beat them. “

Defense was a huge part of the success the Gauchos had as they held Phoenix College to 24 percent shooting and 18 percent from the three point line.

A huge key for a GCC win will be freshman Porshae Hearn. Hearn leads the Gauchos in scoring this season with 14.8 points per game while shooting an excellent 51 percent from the field.

“I feel like I handle being the go to scorer well and that’s because I’m comfortable with the ball and most importantly my teammates are comfortable with me having the ball…,” Hearn said.

Hearn had a solid outing the last time these teams met and believes that working hard and playing with her teammates will be what it takes to get the win.

The Lady Gauchos look forward to their rematch with PC, but will be on the road for their next two games against Pima Community College and Mesa Community College.

According to Hearn, “as long as we play together and come out with a win, that’s what really matters.”

PC Bears v.s. GCC Gauchos starts at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6.
