Faculty, students pleased with fitness center improvements

Since the start of the fall 2015 semester, there have been improvements in the fitness center at Glendale Community College. These improvements range from music selection, to equipment, to job applicants.

All of these additions are classified by the public as change for the better.

The fitness center is located on the north side of the campus. Glendale Community College is one school out of many in the Maricopa Community and is in Arizona located on 6000 W. Olive Avenue.

Kyle Wilfong, a faculty member in the fitness center for two years, had this to said, “I feel like the fitness center has great cleanliness and the conditions are better than the other schools.”

For the students at GCC who didn’t know, there are also courses the fitness center offers. The classes include a full semester or late start worth two credits, or an eight week worth one credit.

The prices given depend on the type of student who is attending GCC, but folks outside the college are welcome as well.

There are many situations where students who are enrolled at GCC work on the campus also.

“We added Pandora to our radio, there are more interns, and there are new machines,” Wilfong said.

It seems there was no negative response from anyone about the fitness center.

From another perspective, “I love all the new machines and the staff is very helpful.” said Alma Torres, a student who has been at GCC for two years. Torres is currently enlisted in a course called Lifetime Fitness and within the course there is no instructor, so in order to pass, a certain amount of hours at the fitness center is required.

When asked what to say to another student who is new to the fitness center Torres said, “Just be dedicated and set yourself up with a goal.”

Torres is not only just a student but an experienced cross country athlete as well. These days she is a manager for the cross country team and she records each player’s time and statistics. Torres also added that she loved her experience on the team, it was worth it and the coach was great.

The fitness center is also located at the GCC North campus and the center also provides programs such as personal training and yoga. The GCC north campus would be located at 5727 West Happy Valley Road.

Uniquely, there are two different fitness centers at GCC. One of them is for the ordinary people and the other is for the disabled.

The fitness center weekly hours are 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday.
