Ohio State Buckeyes win title with third string QB

by Nick Colecchio

College football playoffs are over and it was more successful than expected. After much controversy of the final team who was selected to play for the championship it worked out that the last team selected wound up winning the whole thing. When the playoff committee got together to figure out who the final four teams were going to be the first three were shoe-ins.

Alabama, Oregon, and Florida State were projected to be in the playoff since the season started. The final team was between the powerhouse Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned frogs or the injury -riddled Ohio State Buckeyes. Before the conference championship games people were looking at whom the two teams lost to in the regular season.

TCU lost a nail biter of a game on the road to number five-ranked Baylor after blowing a huge lead. Ohio State, on the other hand, lost to a poor Virginia Tech at home after losing their Heisman trophy candidate Braxton Miller before the season started. After losing Miller and working out the rough bumps with quarterback J.T. Barrett, the Buckeyes won their remaining games finishing with only one loss, putting them in the BIG 10 championship game against Wisconsin.

With the Buckeyes turning their season around they thought they were out of the clear with their problems, and then tragedy struck again when they found out that they would be without J.T. Barrett for the rest of the season after he broke his ankle in the last game against Michigan. With their third string sophomore quarterback and Ohio native Cardale Jones getting the nod against Wisconsin, people gave the Buckeyes no chance to beat Wisconsin therefor not making it to the playoffs. The Buckeye’s then stunned everybody by destroying Wisconsin 59-0 behind talented running back Ezekiel Elliot and the shocking play of Cardale Jones. Meanwhile, TCU doesn’t have a conference championship allowing them an opportunity to make their case to the committee. Therefore, TCU failed to advance into the championship game.

After being picked for the last playoff spot, the Buckeyes were the lowest seed therefor having to go up against the top seeded Alabama Crimson Tide in the semi-finals. If you know anything about college football then you know that Nick Saban is the most respected coach in the country and Alabama always has a great team. After going down by fifteen early in the first quarter it was once again Cardale and Ezekiel who led the Buckeyes on the comeback trail.

The Buckeyes went on a huge run and were able to squeak past the Crimson Tide by winning the game 42-35. In the national championship game, the Buckeyes went up against the Heisman trophy winner in Marcus Mariota and the Oregon Ducks highflying offense. Once again the Buckeyes lost momentum early and were down by a touchdown in just the opening minutes. They also turned the ball over four times in this game. The Buckeye defense was able to hold the Duck offense to only twenty points in route to a blowout win with the final score being 42-20. It was one of the most miraculous runs in college football history. To lose not only your starter but also your second string as well to injury and then recover from an embarrassing loss at home to an un-ranked Virginia Tech team to rise to the top is truly amazing.
