GCC hosts emotional softball alumni game

GLENDALE, Ariz. – GCC’s alumni softball game and fundraiser was an emotional reunion this year. Players from as far back as two decades, and from as far away as Illinois, came together to play against GCC’s current roster softball team in a scrimmage game. The game took place at home field Jan. 29 and the final score was 8-0, GCC’s current team.

“It’s great just seeing the new team and sharing the experiences that we all had together and just reminiscing on those memories. Seeing these girls now creating those same memories we had, it’s very cool to experience that all together,” said Chelsea Galiano, a 2016 graduate visiting from Illinois to attend the game.

“The most rewarding thing is just paying it forward and making sure they understand this is an awesome time in their life that they’re never going to get back, and to enjoy every single one of the moments and make sure they realize the opportunity that they have right now. It’s a huge accomplishment and a huge opportunity,” said Jennifer Brown, a 2000 GCC graduate.

Before the game, several former players gave speeches, often in tears, thanking and showing their appreciation for their former head coach, Laura Dodrill.

“I wanted a program that I could be proud of and I have it, and this is a testament of that. It was a surprise to me that they would honor me and it was just so touching and I am at a loss for words right now,” said Laura Dodrill, former softball head coach from 1995 to 2005.

This particular game was also the first event to promote the newly created Softball Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Housed at the Maricopa Community College Foundation, the fund is a way to help pay for scholarships for GCC softball players. It also provides special support for the softball team and program, such as offering financial assistance to players who may not be able to afford certain equipment or other necessities of the sport.
