Owner opens alternative pet store after losing dog to cancer

PEORIA, Ariz. – Chris Stewart, owner of Peoria’s Pet Market, says he is committed to supplying his customers with only the highest quality foods to ensure their pets live a long and happy life.

When Stewart’s dog, Bianca, passed away from cancer at the age of four, he knew he wanted to help keep other animals from meeting the same fate. Stewart, impassioned by his grief, began searching for the catalyst that may have led to Bianca’s illness, and discovered that the culprit was in her diet—the dog food Bianca ate throughout her life included a preservative known to cause brain cancer. From that point on Stewart dedicated his time to the study of pet nutrition, and eventually became the proud owner and operator of Peoria’s Pet Market. He credits Bianca’s death as the inspiration behind his work.

“Since Bianca passed, it has been my mission to educate and provide as many animals as possible with the best diet,” Stewart said.

Despite being a relatively new business, Peoria’s Pet Market has garnered a loyal clientele. Shelly Thompson, a regular patron of the business, shared details of her experience at Peoria’s Pet Market.

“We have a Caucasian Mountain Shepard, a breed that is not common in the U.S.,” Thompson said. “This breed requires a lot of special feeding and nutrition because of its size. It’s hard, if not impossible, to find anyone who knows about extra-large breed dogs, especially this specific breed.

“Peoria’s Pet Market was the first store that knew about my dog’s breed and provided guidance and information that I was able to use. Their knowledge and recommendations have been a game changer for us. They recommended certain toys and food, and they even carry the extra-large dog leads that no other store carries. Top notch store and service,” she said.

Established in 2019, Peoria’s Pet Market proffers a wide variety of pet supplies and nutritious dog, cat and bird food. Additionally, customers can special-order food for any type of animal at no extra cost. Harrison’s Bird Foods, Avoderm, Barkworthies and Earthborn Holistic are just a few of the brands that fill the shelves of the business, all of them free from unhealthy fillers and unnecessary ingredients.

Thompson is just one of many loyal customers of Peoria’s Pet Market, even through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Peoria’s Pet Market offers personalized service, delivery and friendship. They survived the worst of the pandemic when the big guys didn’t care,” said Diane Mish, another frequent customer. “Chris and team are very knowledgeable and professional.”

Stewart, aware of how lucky he is to have stayed afloat over the last year and a half, expressed his fondness for his faithful customer base and the treatment he received from the community.

“A lot of people realize the importance of shopping local and how it benefits our community,” Stewart explained. “We are very fortunate to have a strong and loyal community at Peoria’s Pet Market that stuck by us in these hard times.”

Peoria’s Pet Market is located at 8978 W. Union Hills Drive, Peoria, Arizona.
